Dagenham & Redbridge boss Ben Stevens conceded his side needed to be more aggressive after they came from behind for a 1-1 draw at Maidenhead United on Saturday.
Having gone behind just seconds before the break, after having the lion's share of possession in the first half, the Daggers rallied to take a point thanks to Josh Umerah's goal.
But Strevens felt they should have taken all three.
“I try to be quite good in these interviews, but I don’t know how to feel right now,” he said.
“First half, we got into some really good positions, some really dominant positions with some balls going in the box. Dion [Pereira] hit the bar, didn’t he?
"I think I was really frustrated to be 1-0 down at half-time, but then the boys came out really on the front foot in the second half. Really positive. We got a deserved equaliser.
“The hope and belief is that we’d go on and win from there, and I thought we really could.
“I don’t know why, maybe because of the late goals we’ve conceded in the game before that we’ve spoken about quite a lot, we just didn’t go with that same belief toward the end of the game.
“I understand it. I’ve been one of them, but I just thought we were really in the ascendency that we could have perhaps put our foot down at points. The positivity is the way they’ve responded to going behind to get that equaliser.”
The draw left Daggers without a win in their last six National League appearances, ahead of a meeting with Steve Morison's Sutton United at the Chigwell Construction Stadium.
And Strevens gave an honest assessment of what to expect from the South London outfit, along with the return of a key forward.
“They’ve obviously got a new manager at the back end of the last year and done particularly well to get promoted a few years ago to go up into the Football League for the first time," he said.
"Coming back down now, they've got some exiting players and have started the season really well. We know they’ll be a tough test.
“I have to say that Josh Umerah, I'm really, really pleased for him and pleased for us since we signed him because he’d been out injured so long last year at Hartlepool.
"We knew he might not make the start of the season and that he’s going to have to have a really strong pre-season within, but I’m so happy he got the minutes he did.
“I didn’t want to take him off, but he’s been out for so long. I’m really pleased for him that he’s got the goal. That’ll help him with his confidence in and around the group.
"He had a really good season two years ago at Hartlepool, but he had a bad injury last year, and I’m thrilled for him today, I really am.”
Daggers host Gateshead on Saturday (5.30pm).
