Dagenham & Redbridge first-team coach Lewis Young was delighted with the performance of the home side as they ran out 3-1 winners over ninth-placed Altrincham on Saturday.
Ryan Hill netted from the spot on the stroke of half-time, before Reghan Linney levelled things up in a similar fashion in first-half stoppage time, after the Altrincham forward was brought down by Tom Eastman.
Josh Rees restored the lead for Daggers on the hour mark, though, with his 12th goal of the season and Harry Phipps added a third just five minutes later to seal the National League points as Ben Strevens’ men ran out winners.
And Young was keen to point out the determination and fight the players showed to overcome setbacks.
“I think we came into it with really good energy and really good intent. I think we had a really fantastic week of training, especially after last week’s disappointing result,” said Young, referring to their home loss against Halifax Town.
“I may sound like a broken record, but I keep saying it to the players - I think our performances have been really, really good.
"Maybe we haven’t always gotten what we’ve deserved and shot ourselves in the foot, but today from the first minute we showed really good intent, know-how, and energy to make sure that we came away with three points.”
On the performance of Phipps, who was forced to operate as a focal point for the Daggers, Young told the club’s media channel that he tends to lead by example.
“I think Phippsy, more than anyone, epitomises the spirit and the will to want to win," added Young.
"Every time he goes on that pitch, he’s fantastic for us. He’s someone that I do a lot of individual and one-on-one work with, and I’ve really enjoyed getting to know him as a person.
“Today he showed great composure, bending his run, and it’s weird. Yesterday on the phone, I said to the gaffer that he’s going to run the channels, and it’s going to be brilliant. He then goes and chops inside and scores.”
Young was then quick to pivot to the performance of the opposition, suggesting that they may be going through a tricky run of form, similar to a situation the Daggers found themselves in earlier on in the season.
“You’ve got to give credit to the opposition. They’ve been fantastic all season, but they’re going through a little bit of a sticky patch as we did through that September and October period," he said.
"But they’ve got great players, and they’ll come out of the other side of it as a better team.”
The Daggers, left in 14th place after their win, now face back-to-back away fixtures starting with an Essex derby against Southend United at Roots Hall on Saturday evening (5.30pm), in front of the live TV cameras.
They then face the long midweek trip to Gateshead on Tuesday.
