After another tumultuous campaign, it all comes to a head today at Barnet, with the Daggers’ fate already settled after another disappointing season - but there is hope that change is coming.
Today is the last game before Ben Strevens enters the transfer market and hopefully transforms the side, getting his players in to play his way and we see where that takes us.
This season, whichever way you look at it, has been one of regression as this time last campaign we were just one point off the play-offs and we are now nine points adrift - without the signs of a squad ready to go and compete again next season.
However, there have been some good individual displays this season who were rightly recognised in the Player of the Season awards last Saturday.
There was yet another accolade for Elliot Justham who continues to be appreciated between the sticks, for again saving valuable points this season, with defenders Sam Ling and Harry Phipps making up the top three. It tells you what sort of season it has been, with both stand-out performers this campaign.
Also after last week’s 0-0 draw with FC Halifax Town, rumours began to circulate which will no doubt rumble on until formal announcements. But one major departure which seemed to be confirmed was Matt Robinson - after six seasons at the club.
The loyal Daggers midfielder, who stuck with the club during the financial turmoil, was keen to point out it was a ‘mutual agreement’ as he confirmed the club would not renew his contract.
It’s obviously a difficult one when a player who has given so much and has such passion for the club, in a difficult period departs. However, as Strevens looks to take this side to the next level it was perhaps a necessary decision and the right time for both parties.
This departure brings with it rumours of replacements and a stand-out name is Cav Miley of Southend United who was a talisman for Eastleigh during Strevens’ tenure. That would be a very good signing if he were to pull it off, given he’s been an ever-present for the Blues this season.
The only saving grace of the Daggers’ campaign has been that change in the dugout and Strevens will be hoping to end the season on a high at Barnet this evening.
Dean Brennan’s side have had quite the season, securing a play-off place, with those games getting underway next week. Therefore, it would be unsurprising perhaps to see a weakened side to prevent injuries today.
Whichever opposition is put out, hopefully the Daggers can end the season on a high and give the travelling supporters something to cheer about - not a regular enough occurrence this season.
Until next week, Come On You Daggers!
