My friend and I went to see the seductive, hilarious Rocky Horror Show on Tuesday night and was ‘shivering with antici…pation’ throughout.
If you’ve ever wondered what happens when a cult classic gets a glamorous facelift, look no further—Jason Donovan’s return to his role as Dr. Frank ‘n’ Furter after a 25-year hiatus is a sight to behold.
Donovan, who first rocked the role decades ago, didn’t just revive the character; he owned it.
His portrayal of the mad scientist was a delicious mix of mischief and seduction, making it clear why he was the first choice to lead this beloved production.
Every audience seat was taken, by viewers dressed as the characters on the stage If you’re thinking the night’s standout performer was Donovan alone, think again.
The show’s heart and hilarity were, for me, delivered by BAFTA award-winning comedian Mawaan Rizwan as The Narrator.
Rizwan brought his unique comedic flair to the role, delivering punchlines with impeccable timing and a cheeky charm that had the audience in stitches.
His interaction with the crowd was a highlight, blending seamlessly into the rowdy, interactive atmosphere that fans of Rocky Horror cherish.
Speaking of crowd interaction, the evening was a textbook example of what makes the Rocky Horror experience so special.
The audience didn’t just watch the show; they were part of it.
Shouts of encouragement, playful heckles, and spontaneous dancing during ‘The Time Warp’ created an electric environment that felt like a celebration of shared nostalgia and irreverent fun.
Some theatregoers came dressed as the characters and brought their own props, like fairy lights for songs ‘Over at the Frankenstein Place’ and rose petals for ‘Rose Tint My World.’
Laura Chia as Janet and Connor Carson as Brad also offered earnest performances that provided the perfect foil to the outrageous antics around them.
Edward Bullingham’s energetic dual role as Eddie and Dr. Scott, Job Greuter’s macabre Riff Raff, Natasha Hoebergis’ dazzling Usherette/Magenta, Morgan Jackson’s Rocky, and Jayme Lee Zanoncelli’s sparkling Columbia collectively made the cast shine even brighter.
The standing ovation at the end was not just a tribute to the stellar performances but also to the show’s enduring legacy.
In a delightful twist, Richard O’Brien, the genius behind the Rocky Horror phenomenon, made a surprise appearance.
His presence was met with rapturous applause and cheers, a fitting tribute to a show that has delighted audiences since its London debut on June 19, 1973.
In a nutshell, this production of The Rocky Horror Show is a high-octane, joy-filled spectacle that expertly balances nostalgia with fresh, dynamic performances.
Whether you’re a die-hard fan or a newcomer to the Time Warp, it’s a show that guarantees an unforgettable night of laughter, music, and absolute fun.
I was smiling throughout the entire show, and as Frank-N-Furter himself puts it, "It's not easy having a good time; even smiling makes my face ache."
