A programme run by nurses to help terminal cancer patients is one of five national awards the trust which runs Queen’s and King George Hospitals is in the running for.
The enhanced supportive care team for the Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust (BHRUT) has been nominated for the Nursing Times' Ingrid Fuchs cancer nursing award.
The team gives palliative care to patients with incurable cancer right from diagnosis.
“It feels amazing to be selected,” joint team leader Pauline Staley said. “Being nominated, especially in cancer nursing, shows how embedded within our oncology team we are.”
BHRUT said it is the only nurse-led service of its kind in the country which helps patients manage their symptoms to live as well as possible for as long as possible.
The hospitals trust is also shortlisted in the best social responsibility programme category for its marketplaces project that distributes free clothing and school uniforms to help its staff get through the cost-of-living crisis.
The programme was set up at the height of the crisis last year for hospital workers and has been run in partnership with the Smile London and Essex charity.
The Chief Nurse Fellows programme run by the trust has also been shortlisted in the best UK employer of the year for nursing staff category. The programme invites staff from different hospital teams to shadow chief nurse Kathryn Halford to improve their own leadership skills.
Winners are being announced at an awards ceremony on November 28.
But the trust has been put forward for two more accolades.
It has been shortlisted for the Prince of Wales award for integrated approaches to care.
This is as a result of a joint programme with Barts Health NHS Trust that gives renal patients online access to their health records. Winners are revealed on October 23.
The neonatal team for Queen's and King George has been shortlisted for outstanding team in the British Association of Perinatal Medicine awards for achieving full accreditation to the Unicef UK baby friendly programme in April. The accreditation is to make sure babies have “the best start in life”.
The winning team is announced on September 11.
