A man left fighting for his life after being stabbed in Dagenham was also shot in an "ambush", the police have said. 

Officers from the Metropolitan Police were called to Whalebone Lane South at 5.20pm yesterday (May 2). 

The initial call reported a stabbing but a second call was received shortly after, reporting that gun shots had been heard. 

A 19-year-old was found at the scene with stab wounds near to the polling station at Becontree Methodist Church. 

He was taken to hospital where he remains in a life-threatening condition. His family have been informed.

The Metropolitan Police have now confirmed he was also shot.

Three men - two 19-year-olds and a 26-year-old - have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. 

Det Insp Iain Wallace said: “We know that the victim was riding a bike on the street when he was attacked by a group of men who arrived at, and left the scene, in three cars.

“This wasn’t a disagreement or a fight, it was an ambush that has left a 19-year-old fighting for his life.

A crime scene is in place at the location and local enquiries are ongoing. Whalebone Lane South remains closed in both directions.
