Children turned their school into a ‘wonderland’ for a day of book reading.
Their favourite story was Alice in Wonderland — so that’s what they chose at Dagenham’s Marsh Green Primary for their second ‘Big Community’ reading event.
The ‘Alice’ theme was enjoyed by the entire school — from infants to Year 6.
All classes had reading, writing, design technology, creative dance and artwork about Lewis Carroll’s all-time favourite storybook character, before taking part in the Wonderland Big Read.
There was a buzz of excitement at the school in South Close as the children swapped the classroom for different ‘reading zones’.
They could select from the history of Lewis Carroll to the imaginative world of The White Rabbit, Tweedle Dum and Tweddle Dee, the Queen of Hearts and her playing card soldiers who painted the roses red — and of course the Mad Hatter’s tea party.
The Big Read focussed the youngsters on reading for pleasure to help their long term education.
