Shoppers started queueing from 3am when a new supermarket was ready to open in Dagenham.
The Iceland store was giving away £1,000 vouchers to the first 100 customers when doors opened five-and-a-half hours later at the Dagenham Heathway shopping centre on Tuesday (April 9).
The promotion also included three shoppers having a go at a 90-second Supermarket Sweep-style trolley dash filling up with whatever took their fancy and nothing to pay.
“We had shoppers waiting for the doors to open from three-o’clock in the morning,” store manager Simon Robinson said. “The queue stretched to 150 by 8.30am before we opened.”
Those in the queue by 8.15am also got free raffle tickets to win slow cookers, air fryers or hampers.
The new store, which fills a former Wilko, is open Monday to Saturday 8.30am to 8pm, Sunday 10am-4pm.
