More than 120 affordable homes have been completed in Barking - part of a net zero carbon housing block.

Be First, the housing company owned by Barking and Dagenham Council, and contractor Willmott Dixon, have announced the completion of 124 affordable homes in the Gascoigne neighbourhood.

This housing block is a central part of the council's plan to tackle climate change, as it is the first net zero carbon building delivered by Be First.

The homes form part of more than 900 intended for completion in the first half of this year by Be First.

Councillor Darren Rodwell, Leader of Barking and Dagenham Council, along with colleagues from Willmott Dixon and Be First, celebrated the achievement at a handover event.

Tim Porter, Be First delivery director, said: "It’s a tremendous achievement by Willmott Dixon to have completed this building in the current economic climate.

"This is a vital step in our march against climate change and our pledge to be carbon neutral by 2030, thereby becoming the Green Capital of the Capital."

The affordable, energy-efficient one, two and three-bedroom flats all meet London Affordable rent criteria.

Cllr Rodwell said: "This marks a significant milestone for our ambition of sustainable and affordable housing for Barking and Dagenham.

"It’s testament to our commitment of combating climate change while providing quality housing for our residents."

He added: "These 124 net zero carbon homes are not just buildings; they're beacons of progress in our journey towards a greener future for all."

Operations director at Willmott Dixon, Steve Kitchen, added: "It is fantastic to be handing over a further 124 affordable homes for the local community of Gascoigne, continuing the success of the 434 homes we’ve delivered alongside Be First already.

"These homes will provide the residents with an incredibly energy efficient, sustainable household ensuring they are future-climate ready and optimising the health and wellbeing of those living within them."

The new Gascoigne neighbourhood is set to be one of London's most sustainable, featuring three new parks, community gardens and orchards, and pedestrian-friendly streets and courtyards.
