A new shop could be welcomed to Barking town centre after a planning application was submitted. 

The plans to add a new retail space to Station Parade is part of an amended application from train operator c2c.

The old application, approved in 2019, requested consent for refurbishment works to be carried out within Barking station, including a new ticket hall area and changes to retail units to create three retail spaces amongst other alterations. 

c2c's request to amend the approved plans could see the large retail unit in the north-eastern corner of the Grade ll listed building split into two smaller spaces by the addition of a solid partition.

As it currently stands, the large unit can be accessed by Station Parade and the station concourse. 

If plans to subdivide the unit are approved, access to the second unit would be had through a new set of glazed double doors to match those already in place. 

The requested amendments have gone through a heritage assessment given the status of the station as listed. 

The conclusion of the heritage assessment confirmed: “Neither the proposed division of the approved retail unit nor the associated insertion of a new set of glazed double doors into the principal elevation of the listed building will cause any harm to its significance.”

It is unclear what business would fill the potential new retail space.
