Local people had earlier told the Recorder that there was a police chase that led to a car hitting some pedestrians on the street.
A passer-by, Kelvin Yeboah, said he was present at the location when the crash happened. He added: “I heard shouting and screaming that a head was split open, and personally saw blood on the floor and three people carried away in an ambulance, very horrific scene."
Images showed police vans and ambulances at the scene.
Becontree Avenue northbound has been partially shut from Longbridge Road to Sylvan Way, the AA reported.
A diversion has been in place for bus route 368.
Met Police and London Ambulance Service has been contacted for official lines on the incident.
Emergency services were also called to Wood Lane in Dagenham at around 12 pm after another crash between a bus and a van. No serious injuries were reported in that incident, the police said.
