Rail passengers are facing severe delays after Storm Henk hit with winds of more than 50mph.

A loss of power to overhead electric wires at Wanstead Park has blocked Overground services between Gospel Oak and Barking Riverside.

Damage to overhead cables in a tunnel north of Euston station as well as an “obstruction” on the tracks towards Watford Junction have also blocked some mainline routes in north London.

Avanti West Coast services from Euston towards the north of England and Scotland are impacted, as well as London Northwestern routes.

National Rail has warned that trains may be cancelled, delayed by up to 50 minutes or revised.

National Rail said that both disruption at Euston station and on affected Overground routes is expected until the end of the day (January 2).

Network Rail said that its engineers had managed to re-open one affected track out of Euston and that the other would be “fully fixed overnight”.

A spokesperson said that they "did not believe" damage to the overhead wires was weather related. 

It added that staff were responding to a “number of flooding incidents across the network”, and apologised to customers for the impact on their journeys.

Rail passengers took to X after they were hit by disruption. One user simply commented: “Euston is a mess”.

It comes as the Met Office issued an amber weather warning as Storm Henk hit the capital, with winds exceeding 50mph having been recorded.

The Met Office said that Storm Henk was likely to cause “disruption to travel and utilities”, with the potential for power cuts and damage to buildings.

Flying debris was also “likely”, with the Met Office warning this could lead to injuries.

The amber weather warning will remain in place until around 8pm this evening.
