Halifax has announced the closure of their Dagenham branch in 2024 - and the move has generated anger among some.
The branch in Heathway, Dagenham will permanently shut on May 15.
A spokesperson for Halifax said: “As many customers now choose to bank online or through their mobile app, visits to our Dagenham branch have fallen over recent years."
The news has shocked locals who have taken to social media to express their dissatisfaction at the closure of the bank.
One Facebook user said: "I’m old school i don’t no (sic) about all this online banking. I just used to go up the bank and pay my money in."
Another commented that they would be forced to travel to Romford for their banking.
It is just the latest bank to close in Heathway - Barclays shut earlier this year and Santander did the same in 2021.
Dagenham and Rainham MP Jon Cruddas said: "I was extremely disappointed to hear the Halifax will be leaving Dagenham Heathway.
"This is the latest in a series of bank branch closures over the past few years and all serve to further deteriorate the high street.
"My main concern is that this now means those who rely on face-to-face services, such as older people and more vulnerable adults, will now struggle to access their money and the range of financial services provided by high street banks."
The bank has released part one of their closing branch review, which details the reasons behind the closure.
The review states: "The world is becoming more digital than ever before and more of our customers are doing their everyday banking online.
"With more customers banking digitally, we've seen a fall in branch visits. Because of this, we've decided to close this branch."
The second part will summarise feedback following engagement with the community and will be available "at least two weeks before closure".
According to Halifax, 85 per cent of their Dagenham customers already use other ways of banking, such as mobile, internet or phone banking, as well as other branches.
Transactions from the Dagenham branch are said to have fallen over 65pc between 2018 and 2023.
The Halifax spokesperson said: "When the branch closes in May, customers can continue to bank with us online, over the phone, in person at our Barking branch, or the local post office at The Mall.”
They added the closest free-to-use cash machine is just 0.01 miles away from the branch, with five free-to-use ATMs within a quarter mile.
