An "innovative" new multi-storey industrial scheme set to create hundreds of jobs is finished, according to Barking and Dagenham Council's regeneration arm.

Be First has unveiled the completed Industria site in Barking, which it says is the first scheme of its kind in London.

First designed in 2019 by architect Haworth Tompkins in collaboration with industrial specialist Ashton Smith, the site is now ready to welcome business. 

Be First’s managing director Geoff Raw described it as a “progressive” project and said the organisation is "trying to get ahead of the game”  with it.

Industria, which spans over 100,000 sq ft, is suited to support the growth of film and food-based businesses but isn't targeted at a specific sector, according to Be First.

It features loading bays and service yards and a total of 45 units that can be used for industrial and factory purposes. Units start from £25 per sq ft and come in a choice of sizes.

It is expected to generate around 300 new jobs in the Barking and Dagenham area and has employee wellbeing at its core, with several enriching amenities on site including a café, breakout spaces and cycle facilities.

Industria was also built with sustainability in mind, with Mr Raw saying the project was “really thought about in terms of net zero carbon emissions commitments”.

He hopes Industria will “help spur other investments in up-and-coming areas”.

Jules Pipe, deputy London mayor for planning, regeneration and skills, said: “I welcome Be First’s innovative Industria development which showcases the intensification and modernisation of industrial floorspace in line with the London Plan, as well as putting small and medium-sized businesses at the heart of the local economy.

"It is creating jobs and business opportunities that benefit the community, leading to a greener and more prosperous London for everyone.”

Be First are set to announce a new plan next year for Industria’s regeneration profile for the next ten years.

It will see how the building works and lets and learn from it for future developments, according to Mr Raw.
