A community garden has been opened with artworks by children on the Becontree Estate as a space for therapeutic work in social care.
The artworks have been unveiled in the new garden that has been created by Blak Outside art collective to show how creative work helps families at the edge of care.
The garden at Mayesbrook House in Markyate Road is part of a programme to improve Barking and Dagenham Council’s social care and intervention services.
“This community garden is for families to benefit from,” deputy council leader Saima Ashraf said. “It shows how we can bring in new ways to improve people’s lives through art and culture projects.”
Creating the garden was part of the authority’s New Town Culture programme of using artistic activity to improve social care.
The programme launched in 2018 involves 700 youngsters using workshops, clubs, exhibitions, live performances and mentoring.
