Barking and Dagenham Carnival is returning this year, with workshops, musical performances and food stalls.

This year's carnival is taking place on Saturday, July 8 from 1pm to 6.30pm in Barking Town Square. 

Carnival-goers can expect performances from international carnival artists, schools, community groups and street dancers.

Craft-making workshops will be available throughout the day, alongside steel pan sessions, African drumming sessions and tamboo bamboo sessions.

A spokesperson for the event said: "Our carnival allows us to raise an understanding of carnival arts regardless of any negativity that people may feel towards it.

"We want to encourage the community to stand together with a positive frame of mind to enable social harmony."

Stalls will also be manned by local businesses.

Those who participate in pre-event workshops can take on a role in the carnival.

The carnival was originally created by Ukon Careers in 2014 as a children's celebration.

It has since transformed into a family event, open to all members of the public.
