Almost 200 homes are set to be built as part of the latest phase of a development in Marks Gate.

A reserved matters planning application for the construction of buildings up to 11 storeys tall on land at Padnall Lake, in Padnall Road, was approved by Barking and Dagenham Council's planning committee.

A council report on the application, submitted by the authority, said all of the 190 homes proposed will be 'affordable'.

Construction has begun on phase one of the scheme, which includes 70 homes, and site clearance has began in preparation for work on phase two.

Across the whole site, the development would provide 182 homes at 'affordable' rent and 78 homes at London Affordable Rent.

The homes will be managed by council-owned housing company Barking and Dagenham Reside.

Phase two will see 60 one-bed homes, 48 two-bed homes and 82 three-bed homes built. Of the latter, 44 will be houses.

During the December 19 meeting, committee chair Muhammad Saleem said: "I really welcome nearly 50pc of the units being three-bedroom family-size units which I think are very much in demand in our borough."

There will be 68 car parking spaces as part of this phase, the report added.

It said that the wider Marks Gate area is being consulted on the introduction of a controlled parking zone.

Planning officers added all residents of the new development, including phase one homes, would not be allowed to secure parking permits in the area.

More than 350 cycle parking spaces will be provided as part of phase two.

This phase also features 6,720 square metres of landscaped open space in the form of a park.

Anna Sinnott, director of planning consultancy for Be First, the council's regeneration arm, told the meeting the design for the scheme had evolved after consultation with residents.

She said: "Overall the proposed buildings and provision of high-quality, landscaped areas will make a positive contribution to the Marks Gate neighbourhood.

"The proposals enable the delivery of a scheme which will provide 100 per cent high-quality, affordable housing for local people and, in particular, will make an important contribution to meeting an identified need for more affordable-sized housing in the borough."

Committee members unanimously approved the application.
