The latest phase of a major industrial park which could bring thousands of jobs to east London has been waved through by City Hall.

Jules Pipe CBE, deputy mayor for planning, has written to Barking and Dagenham Council telling the authority he is happy for it to approve plans for Plot 2 at Segro Park Dagenham.

Applicant Segro is planning to redevelop the Choats Road site and build around 30,000 square metres of industrial space.

To be called V-Park Dagenham, it is contained within the East Plus regeneration programme being delivered in partnership with the Greater London Authority.

The East Plus scheme aims to deliver up to 1.4 million square feet of commercial space across sites in Barking and Dagenham, Havering and Newham along the A13 corridor.

It also originally pledged to deliver 7,000 new jobs.

Segro said it has already delivered developments in Newham and Havering as part of the scheme.

A spokesperson added: "To date, the partnership is on track to meet the 10-year programme to regenerate key areas and support local communities.

"The partnership’s closely aligned objectives and working relationship helping to successfully deliver modern and sustainable space offered in a mix of size and tenures to attract a range of new businesses."

Barking and Dagenham Council granted planning permission for the proposal last July but Transport for London (TfL) objected on highways grounds.

Following talks between Segro and TfL, the developer provided extra cash for changes to bus services serving the site and road improvements as well as cutting the number of car parking spaces.

The council then once again approved the plans in December 2021, before referring them to the Mayor of London.

In a report, planning officers for the Greater London Authority said issues raised at the consultation stage have been "acceptably resolved".

"The application is acceptable in strategic planning terms, and there are no sound planning reasons for the mayor to intervene in this case," they wrote.

The council also approved a proposal for Plot 3, known as V-Park Barking, last December.

This plan for a multi-storey industrial building, also in Choats Road, is to offer just more than 10,000 sq m of industrial space.

On V-Park Dagenham and V-Park Barking, the Segro spokesperson said: "The details and timing for the development of these plots are still being finalised and are subject to favourable market conditions."
