Work is set to begin early next year on a planned 3,500-home development on the site of the former Ford stamping plant in Dagenham.

The first phase of the Dagenham Green project, next to Dagenham Dock station, will start in March and see 935 homes built.

Housing association Peabody said it has entered into a joint venture partnership with housebuilder The Hill Group to deliver the project.

Councillors and Peabody representatives were joined by London's deputy mayor for housing, Tom Copley, at the site after Barking and Dagenham Council approved plans for the first phase.

That approval is subject to agreement from the Environment Agency.

Of the 3,500 homes overall, 1,640 will be 'affordable', a Peabody spokesperson said, as well as 35 per cent of the 935 homes being delivered in phase one.

Mr Copley said: “With soaring prices and a rental market that is under considerable strain, we need more high quality, genuinely affordable homes and this is a fantastic step towards building a better London for everyone.” 

The opening phase of the project will include parks, play areas and a heritage trail.

Peabody said there will also be design representation in the buildings to honour the legacy of the Dagenham women who fought for equal pay through strikes in 1968 and 1984. 

James McMylor, regional managing director of development at Peabody, said the site will reflect Dagenham's "rich heritage".

He added: “Peabody is committed to ensuring that the Dagenham Green community works for new and existing residents, many of whom have had their say about the proposals during consultation.  

“Phase one draws on inspiration from the marshland and will honour the legacy of the women who took part in the Ford sewing machinists’ strikes. 

“It’s really important for us to recognise and build on this history while delivering much needed new high-quality homes, new public realm and a variety of green spaces.

“This is an exciting step towards the creation of a vibrant and welcoming new community at the site of the former Ford stamping plant."

A Peabody spokesperson said it expects phase one to be complete by 2029.
